Business: A Startup Marketplace that Connects Fashion Brands With Boutiques

Some pals asked me if I can fish out the best online store for them to buy in retail, as a Marketplace..  So here we go folks.
In March 2010, Bijoor launched Joor, an online wholesale marketplace that connects retail buyers with designers and brands. Brands can upload their collections to Joor, reach out to store buyers that might want to carry their merchandise (rather than cold calling over the phone) and process orders. Buyers, in turn, can discover new designers and submit orders.

Joor makes money by charging brands a $3,500 setup fee and a 3% cut of every sale. Competitors includeBalluunBrandboom and Boutique Fashion Brokers.

About Google Calender
.................................................

Google Calendar is a free time-management web application offered by Google. It became available on April 13, 2006, and exited the beta stage in July 2009. Users are required to have a Google Account in order to use the software.

Google integrated Google Calendar with Gmail (its e-mail service). When sending a message to someone, you can choose to attach an event invitation. Clicking on the option brings up a form. Once you fill out the form, Google Calendar puts the event on your calendar. If the recipient has a compatible calendar program (like Google Calendar or Microsoft Outlook), accepting the invitation results in a new scheduled event on his or her own calendar.

BlackBerry 10: How RIM might reel you in. Really

I posted an article few days ago about the new BlackBerry (read article here), and thanks to readers.. But now its about how the BlackBerry company known has RIM might surprise there fans, and how the company might REEL their lovers in the big time.

Now, with the company having a new leadership team, the company is hoping to bounce back with BlackBerry 10. The phones that will be approaching the market as a hungry and unproven challenger. And to make this happen, the company needs to scramble to build some buzz and make up for lost time over the next few months leading up to its launch early next year.

RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said on Tuesday that the company has a "clear shot" at being the No. 3 smartphone player behind Google's Android and Apple's iPhone.
"RIM's BlackBerry 10 mobile platform is a make-or-break event for the company," said Cowen analyst Matthew Hoffman.

But for the new BlackBerry to be on top of the smartphone market; there are many advice, reviews and speculation. But I am going to give the summary of a Cnet article, (you can read the full here).

Spend 'til you drop
With so many smartphones angling for prime position in the mindset of consumers, marketing can make all the difference.

How much is enough to spend? The campaign for the original Droid from Motorola, which was largely backed by Verizon Wireless, is said to have been over $100 million. Samsung has almost certainly spent as much, if not more, on its Galaxy S campaign over the past few years.
Nokia in its push for the Lumia 900, with AT&T took over all of the billboards of Times Square and held a quick concert with Nikki Minaj in an attempt to drum up attention for the phone.

Nicki Minaj performed a quick concert amid
the flashing banners promoting the Lumia 900.

The telecommunications industry is second to the automakers when it comes to spending on advertising, according to Roger Entner, a consultant at Recon Analytics.
"It's a game for the big boys," he said.

A company like Apple has enough built-in buzz that it doesn't have to be too proactive with marketing (check the Apple's iphone commercial here), but that's different for the likes of RIM. It needs to be more aggressive than ever if it wants to make dent in the public's awareness of its new phones. Samsung already has a proven hit with the Galaxy S III, but that hasn't stopped it from bombarding the airwaves with non-stop commercial.

"RIM will have to spend a fortune in market education across all channels," Lopez said. "Fortunately they get this and have a plan for it."
Boulben said he is working with carriers to train the in-store staff and call centers, as well as working together on promotional materials.
"We are going to have a high level of cooperation and partnership," he said.

 Be specific
RIM needs to avoid going the clever route and create commercials and ads that effectively communicate the advantages of BlackBerry 10. The company talked about the new navigation scheme, "Flow," and a way to access apps seamlessly, "Peak." It needs to demonstrate why a consumer would care, and how they help improve one's daily life.

It seems RIM understand that. "Our marketing approach will be very much about showing, not telling," Boulben said, adding that the focus will be on specific examples of each feature.

Apple and Samsung's ads are effective because they specifically show how their signature features allow their phones to stand out from the pack. Check the Apple's iphone commercial here.

RIM will likely get more exposure thanks to the carriers. With few other phones launching in the first quarter, and the company's promises of wide carrier support, BlackBerry 10 could benefit from a solo run.
"They've seen BB10 and they love it," Boulben said. "We will have strong backing from carriers."

RIM can't just rely on the carriers, it needs to have its own voice.
That's a voice, by the way, that shouldn't include a creepy woman and lots of ambiguous circular imagery.

CNET writer Casey Newton rightly compares the challenges to the ones that Windows Phone has faced over the past year.

Don't be petty
The smartphone world has seen a lot of sniping between companies. For a company struggling to get back on top, going after more popular rivals is a bad idea.

Take Nokia's campaign for the Lumia 900. The company announced to the world that the "smartphone beta test was over," calling all past phones a trial run leading up to the supposedly perfect Lumia 900.

"Nokia's campaign was atrocious," said Roger Entner, a consultant with Recon Analytics. "To launch your phone as the first real smartphone...you're just asking for it."

"You want to talk positively about your products," Entner said. "If you talk about your competitors, you look petty and give them airtime.

"Consumers want to have a better product and better experience. Show me that better experience in the form of a funny story in 30 seconds. That wins."
The sad truth is even after all of this, there's a chance RIM can fail. There's only so much room for multiple mobile operating systems, and the carriers aren't going to go out of their way to back a struggling No. 4 player.
The next few months will show how big of bang RIM wants to make as it launches what is poised to be its last, best shot at a comeback.

Google Adds YouTube Support To Google Takeout, Now Lets You Download Your Original Video Files

Google just added a new feature to Google Takeout, the company’s “data liberation” service for downloading your personal data from Google’s various services. Starting today, you will also be able to easily download the videos you previously uploaded to YouTube.

The files you download from Takeout are exactly the same files you previously uploaded. These files will not feature the transcoding or transformations that YouTube generally applies to your videos before they go live on YouTube.  YouTube engineer Brian Hawkins describes this process in the announcement today as “Your videos in. Your videos out.”

The Top five portable drives

Following are the top five external hard drives on the market now that collectively offer all the goodies of the external storage world: speed, storage space, data safety, portability, and, of course, sexiness. They are sorted in the order Cnet reviewed with the most recently reviewed on top.

LaCie Rugged USB 3.0 Thunderbolt
The LaCie Rugged USB 3.0 Thunderbolt is the third Thunderbolt portable on the market that's bus-powered, meaning you don't need a separate power adapter for it. It supports both Thunderbolt and USB 3.0, and comes in both solid-state drive (SSD) and hard-drive versions.

WD My Passport Edge
The new WD My Passport Edge is the latest in WD's My Passport family of portable drives. The new drive is now much more compact and light, while still offering very good USB 3.0 performance. The drive is designed for Windows PCs (though can easily be reformatted for Macs) and comes with very useful backup software. With a single capacity of 500GB.

Buffalo MiniStation Thunderbolt
The Buffalo MiniStation Thunderbolt portable drive,  was the first Thunderbolt storage device on the market to also support USB 3.0. And it was the first to come with a Thunderbolt cable included, setting a new precedent that has been followed by other drives, such as the LaCie Rugged Thunderbolt above. Available in 500GB and 1TB capacities, the hard-drive-based Buffalo performed well in my testing. It also looks great. It comes formatted for Macs but can be easily reformatted to work with Windows.

Seagate Backup Plus
The Backup Plus (available in 500GB, 650GB, and 1TB capacities) is the latest portable hard drive from Seagate, replacing the company's popular GoFlex line, which was first introduced back in 2001 and is known for being extremely flexible.

Digsby, Owned By Social Network Tagged, Is Now Open Source And Living On GitHub

The social/instant messaging client bought by social network Tagged in April 2011 and effectively put into an idle state soon after: it has now been taken open source, with its code now living on GitHub.

“They have expertise and technology in real-time communications which we want to use to push into instant messaging, group chat, video chat, etc. IM is our most requested feature on Tagged,” said Tagged’s CEO Greg Tseng at the time.

“The Disgby product has remained its own entity since its acquisition and is not integrated into Tagged,” a spokesperson confirms. However, the team’s expertise did make it in. “The Digsby team was deployed into various areas within Tagged, including mobile offerings, internal tools development and other site features. “ Digsby’s founder, Steve Shapiro, is now Tagged’s director of product management.

When Digsby was acquired by Tagged, it had some 3 million users of its messaging client, and this is a number that the company says is now higher and “definitely growing.”

“As a team of passionate open source users, we felt that Digsby’s bright future should be driven both by Tagged and the development community that has so often sung its praises,” says Tseng. Indeed, it was some frustrated parts of that community that had been requesting an open source Digby for some time now.

Study: Faces Too Close In Photo Perceived As Less Attractive, Trustworthy, And Competent

New findings and research have concluded that Too close headshot may ignore an important factor in how people judge trustworthiness, attractiveness, and competence...

 What? Yes!

 Roonie Bryan, who published the findings and soon to be quoted in every campaign and cosmetic shop in the USA in this week’s issue of open-access journal, PLoS ONE says;
“It turns out that faces photographed quite close-up are geometrically warped, compared to photos taken at a larger distance.”

Before you readers voice out your suprise, all I'm saying here is that, if you spend some time planning a picture, you should also put distance into consideration, according to this interesting piece of research.

Most European Languages Unlikely to Survive Online

Languages are often automatically translated by comparing each new sentence against thousands of sentences previously translated  by people and stored in a database. The better the match, the more accurate the result. But statistical methods are doomed to fail in the case of languages with smaller pools of sample data, the study said.

The study, “Europe’s Languages in the Digital Age,” was carried out by META-NET, a European nonprofit that aims to future-proof at least 30 of the 80 languages spoken in Europe. META-NET has designated Sept. 26 as The European Day of Languages.
META-NET says the gaps in technology across European languages must be overcome to establish a single digital market, one where language does not hamper the flow of information. But the barriers are huge, they say. The deep-rooted English-language focus of most research and development is one big hurdle. In addition, Europe’s oldest languages are imperiled by the inherent difficulties, little interest and insufficient funds on the part of tech companies.
