Four number sandboxes in one app are ideal for letting a preschooler freely experiment with the first mathematical relationships using number sets that range from 0 to 1000. It is rare to find an early math app that offers this type of number range and flexibility.

NASA Science: A Journey of Discovery

Ages 8+

Free

Overall rating: 4.625 out of 5 stars

Organized around four questions that have driven NASA research, this free app lets you explore the effects of space weather on Earth, global warming, the search for other habitable planets, and the quest to learn more about Mars. There are photos to swipe, movies to watch and interactive maps to explore.

Where's My Perry

Ages 8+

$0.99

Overall rating: 4.6 out of 5 stars

Use your fingertip to guide water in its different forms (ice, steam and liquid) through different levels, to achieve a goal. The game feels a bit like "cut the rope" because you have to plan your tunnels carefully, so enough water is left to reach your goal.

All in all, this is an excellent quality, but highly commercialized app.

Consider yourself warned -- this app is addictive. It was inspired from the "Where's My Water" app, only with Disney's Phineas & Ferb characters.

Pay attention to the way this app is monetized. You buy the first level for $.99, which gives you 80 puzzles. Additional sets of puzzles cost $.99 each as in-app sales, or you can unlock the full series for $1.99. So the true cost of this app is $2.99. There are a lot of padlocks in this game. In addition there are frequent Facebook-"like" pings.

LEGO Creationary

Ages 5+

Free

Overall rating: 4.6 out of 5 stars

Simple but fun, we liked this timed guessing game that lets you earn points by correctly identifying which object is being constructed on the screen.

The app is free, but be aware. LEGO wants to promote awareness of its popular LEGO kits, so though your child may have fun with this app, a $29.99 LEGO kit may wind up on the wishlist sometime down the road. See the video review here.
